What is Ark-AHEAD?
Arkansas Association on Higher Education and Disability (Ark-AHEAD) is an organization for professionals working with people with disabilities in postsecondary education settings in Arkansas. Ark-AHEAD plays a vital role in the provision of professional development and networking opportunities. We strive to respond to the rapid changes in the law and in “accepted” accommodation practices, the isolation felt by many disability coordinators, and the dual roles that many professionals serve. Memberships from all postsecondary schools–public, private, two-year, four-year, graduate, and the vocational technical colleges are invited. Ark-AHEAD members unite in our common needs and concerns in service to students with disabilities. Ark-AHEAD is affiliated with AHEAD (the national Association on Higher Education and Disability).
About the Ark-AHEAD Board
The Ark-AHEAD Board is made up of professionals from higher education institutions and partner agencies across the state. Elections are held annually for most Board positions. The exception to that is the position of Vice President. The person accepting the office of Vice President is committing to a three-year commitment on the Board—serving the first year as Vice President, the second as President and the third as Immediate Past President. Serving on the Board provides a great opportunity to network and provide input into the activities of the organization.

Ark-AHEAD was established as a statewide organization in 1995. A small number of disability resource professionals in Arkansas had been members of the national AHEAD and had attended the national conference, but thought it would be helpful to build local resources within Arkansas. Providing professional development opportunities to professionals was a major impetus for the creation of this organization.
